In the late 1970’s, 16-year-old Thomas Warrick took his first part-time job creating women’s shoe displays at Mailing Shoe Stores in Chicago. He worked hard and received the added benefit of learning merchandising, accounting, business and marketing while eventually excelling at creating eye-catching displays.
After graduating high school, he went to work full time. Tom developed many solid relationships with customers and suppliers and, after a time, he was offered a position at a successful uniform company where he began again with window displays, advanced to management and became involved with purchasing.
In Summer of 1987, Tom decided to establish a new uniform business in the Chicago area, partnering with a former co-worker. He worked with integrity to create partnerships with manufacturers and loyal relationships with clients, using care to fulfill the needs of both. Clients were paid special visits and uniforms were custom measured to ensure customer satisfaction. As the industry grew, Tom worked to expand the lines of uniforms offered. Tom was happy with their success, but circumstances split the partners up and the business dissolved.
On October 18, 1991, Thomas founded All Seasons Uniforms. Armed with only his honesty, enthusiasm, experience and a loan from his parents, Tom worked overtime to rebuild his relationships with manufacturers and clients. He took a close look at the uniform needs in the Chicago area and strove to create high quality lines at affordable prices. His customer service oriented business plan was in place, but he knew he needed some help.
It was at this time that one of his biggest and most successful clients over the years, Mr. Jerry Green, came to mind. Green had appreciated Tom’s service and commitment so much in the day he had said, “Tom, I’ll follow you anywhere.” Tom hoped to take him up on it, and a phone call later, Green asked Tom to meet him out at an enormous warehouse in an industrial park. Upon arriving, Green gestured around, smiling…
“So Tom, you wanna do this or what?”
“Heck yeah! Let’s do this!”
It was at this warehouse that All Seasons Uniforms placed its first $10,000 order with VF Imagewear (who owned Lee, Wrangler, etc). As a new customer, VF Imagewear insisted on having a retainer on file, it wasn’t long before the retainer was returned to Tom for doing such excellent business, keeping his word and even growing his orders. For the next few years, ASU continued to grow more successful. And then…came the Internet.
Tom had never thought about the Internet, but when he discovered the possibilities, he jumped right in. Jerry Green brought a professor from the nearby university and together they taught Tom’s staff to create web pages and initiate selling online. It took several months to become a well-oiled machine, but finally they were making online sales. With these advances, they attracted big clients like TCI (AT&T), Sysco and Clorox.
As Tom began traveling less to clients for sales and relying more on phone and Internet sales, naturally it was time to start bringing the family into the business. ASU was proud to be one of the first uniform companies on the Internet anywhere. With two sons, Tom looked forward to the possibility they might become involved in his life’s occupation. His older son, Nick, began helping with menial tasks around the age of ten.
Throughout his teenage years, Nick accompanied his father to meetings and supervised productions. He did data entry, warehouse work and taught himself to update the website. He graduated from Loyola with a degree in Business and a desire to integrate the latest technology with All Seasons, so Tom gave Nick a leadership role in the company. Nick took ASU’s website out of the 90s and into the future of ecommerce.
While Nick continued to work with his father, younger brother John Paul pursued his own education and work experiences. Tom’s wife had retired from State Farm to raise the children and, once grown, found herself with a desire to return to work.
Maria Warrick came to work in the order entry department. As Maria learned the business, she moved into the front office and promptly took over, improving outdated accounting systems and managing the business side of ASU.
The company continued to grow rapidly in sales, personnel and client base until the start of the recession at the end of 2007. At their peak of growth, about 25 people were employed to create almost $4 million in sales per year. With the recession came the business decision to downsize for a time. Tom, Nick and their team discovered that being smaller was actually a good thing. It was easier to provide more personalized service and allowed clients to know all the staff by name.
Additionally, All Seasons Uniforms shares a 20+ year relationship with Dilars, one of the best embroidery services in the business. This relationship was one of the things that helped keep ASU competitive during tougher times. Dilars specialized in customized digitizing and design work and did all work in house, giving ASU the advantage of even more personal full service for their clients. ASU also worked to exceed clients’ expectations with quality clothing and uniform accessories from the most trusted brand name manufacturers.
As the economy turned upwards, Tom and Nick continued to modernize the business as they looked to the newest marketing technologies. John Paul returned to the family business as well, discovering he had quite the knack for sales. He was well liked by all the customers and took pride in ensuring their satisfaction.
Maria Warrick showed no signs of slowing down as she truly enjoyed running the front office with efficiency and care. With her never-ending dedication to All Seasons Uniforms, it was an easy decision to transfer 51% of the shares of the company to Maria, making ASU a woman owned business. She truly shares the common goal and mission of personalized customer service and focus, and her sons are proud to work by her side.
As Tom gets closer to choosing retirement, he looks upon the company with pride and satisfaction as his sons are taking his vision to the next level by keeping up with technology and never losing sight of individual customer satisfaction.
“My boys are taking over. They’re real go-getters. We’re here to help people out and we care about what they want and need. It’s how I was brought up. It’s how my sons were as well. I think our customers know that.”
